Craftmanship... …Nepal

One thing which may be said about Nepalese craftsmanship is that Newars of Kathmandu Valley had developed very high standard of religious art which can be seen in temple and sculptural architecture. No where else is the mastery more perceptible. To wit, the bronze statues symbolize religion, mystic abstruse to the average outsider. The impression we find with the objects maid in ancient time differs from an Indian and Tibetan art. Art critics down the years have repeatedly said most of the images of Gods have an element of grotesque, the unreal and somewhat exuding terror. They are mystic, watchful and do appear unkind to the worshipper. As may be seen, the images are out of proportion in execution and show a co-existence of human and animal forms. Images with fear exuding pair of eyes not only appear unkind, they appear as if they are about to strike the worshipper. Also there are images of Gods and Goddesses which are too vividly and grossly depicted in sexual intimacy. There is still more aspect of the art if we consider the images which are threatening in the very appearance. They are so very expressive of the bliss in sexual union and ethereal joy that one cannot look at them long in others’ presence; object makes the observer have strange feelings. Not only are the images, even the temples very in style, along with this, there another particular feature in the temple-complex of Nepal. The Duarpals or the deity guards at the portals of the temples are usually very fierce with the fearful looks. The terrifying Gods that tear the body of the demons or the infidels keep watch at the entry to the holy places and worshipper with impure spirit cannot go near. Sea-lions and other animals are among more sophisticated guards. The Swayambhunath stupa with all-seeing eyes keeps an endless watch over the Kathmandu valley with blessings; none have denied this in the religious circle.
